UNDP Delegation Reviews Community Water and Sanitation Progress
A senior delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana office visited META Foundation project communities in the Upper East Region to review progress on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions. The delegation toured boreholes, household latrines, and handwashing stations installed under the joint programme over the past two years.
Community water management committees, trained by META Foundation, demonstrated how they collect modest user fees to fund borehole maintenance and purchase spare parts locally. The UNDP team praised the sustainability model, noting that all 18 boreholes visited were fully operational with no recorded downtime in the previous quarter. "This is exactly the kind of community ownership we want to see replicated across the country," said the UNDP Resident Representative.
During the visit, META Foundation also presented data showing a 60 percent reduction in waterborne disease cases in participating communities since the programme launched. Both organisations agreed to explore expanding the model to additional districts in the Northern and Savannah Regions.
