Climate-Smart Agriculture Training Reaches 300 Farmers in Bongo District
META Foundation, in partnership with AICCRA and IFDC, has successfully trained over 300 smallholder farmers in Bongo District on climate-smart agricultural practices. The training, held across 12 communities, introduced drought-resistant maize and millet varieties alongside composting and mulching techniques that help retain soil moisture during the dry season.
Participants also learned to interpret seasonal weather forecasts provided through a mobile-based advisory service. Early adopters from a pilot group in Zorko reported a 40 percent increase in yield last season after switching to the recommended varieties and applying organic fertiliser. "For the first time, my harvest lasted until the next planting season," said Azara Ayine, a mother of five who farms a one-acre plot.
META Foundation plans to scale the programme to neighbouring Kassena-Nankana districts by mid-year, with a target of reaching 1,000 additional farmers. Demonstration plots have been established in each participating community so that farmers can observe results firsthand before the next planting season begins.
